It is believed that distilled alcohol spread from Poland via Lithuania, Belarus and Ukraine to Russia, although some Russians dispute this. But the very word 'vodka' entered the Russian language as late as the 19th century and before that, the Russian language had no 'vodka' word. In 1886, 92.5% of spirit imported to St. Petersburg was Baltic in origin, mostly Estonian. Also at that time, Poland belonged to the Russian empire.

This is one of Cappiellos most spectacular designs. Although a later design for the same firm announced its white vermouth, this earlier promotion elevates the Contrattos champagne to new heights, with the froth cascading temptingly over the rim of the glowing glass.

The Saumur Veuve Amiot is the jewel in the crown of the Saumur Appellation d'origine Controlèe (AOC). The principle demands made of the AOC wines are that:-They be produced in the specified geographical area of Saumur Brut.-They be produced in casks from grape varieties such as the Chenin and the Chardonnay.-They undergo second fermentation in the bottle in line with the principles of the traditional method.- After it has been bottled and the secondary fermentation has begun, it must age for at least 9 months.- It must be tasted twice in order to be approved by the Institut National des Appellations d'Origine (INAO), the authority which grants AOC status to wines.

The company Albert Robin was established by none other than Albert Robin in 1860 and the business has been in the family ever since; Cappiellos representation of a bird of choice is more a fanciful rendering than an actual robin.
